KOL and Influence Mapping

We find the physicians your data vendors are missing.

Key opinion leader identification, scoring and engagement strategy for pharma launches. We validate inherited lists, surface the rising influencers nobody is engaging yet, and tier every name with a rationale your medical and commercial teams can defend in a cross-functional review.

You should be on this page if any of these sound familiar.

  • You’re 12 to 18 months from launching a new molecule and the KOL list you inherited has never been independently validated.
  • You suspect your reps and MSLs are calling on the wrong physicians, and your data vendor can’t tell you who the right ones are.
  • You’re paying your data vendors and still missing prescribers outside the academic core.
  • You need advisory board, speaker bureau and steering committee picks that will hold up to internal scrutiny, not just a contact list.
  • You want to find the next generation of influencers before other teams start engaging them.
  • You’re entering a new therapeutic area and have no baseline of who matters and why.

We treat every KOL list as a hypothesis.

We check it against five independent sources, add who’s missing and tier every name.

Publication intelligence

Peer-reviewed output, citation metrics, authorship pattern and clinical trial publications, weighted by recency, impact and indication relevance.

Guidelines and panels

National guideline committees, consensus statements and society position papers. The people writing the rules, regardless of Rx volume.

Organizational networks

National society leadership, cooperative trial groups, provincial cancer agencies and regional networks. The people other physicians follow.

Conference and faculty

Plenary speakers, chairs, abstract authors and panel discussants. Influence shows up at the podium long before it shows up in claims data.

Prescriber and real-world data

Provincial billing, national datasets, real-world evidence and AI-assisted public-record mining, to close the gaps your data vendor can’t.

A six-dimension framework that travels with the name.

Each physician earns a score on every dimension. Scores roll up into a four-tier engagement plan with phased pre-launch timelines: National Champions engaged 12 to 18 months out, Community Prescribers post-launch. When your medical affairs lead asks why this person is Tier 1 and that one is Tier 2, you have the answer in writing.

  • Clinical expertiseIn the indication
  • National peer influenceCitations, invitations, seats
  • Academic statureAppointments, grants, teaching
  • Pharma engagementAdvisory boards, prior industry work
  • Therapy-area relevanceStanding in the wider therapy area
  • Conference and podiumPlenary, abstract and chair roles

Before any deliverable leaves our office, a separate analyst runs a QA audit against the dataset. In one oncology pre-launch engagement, the audit caught 17 tier-assignment errors, 9 data-inflation cases and 3 inappropriate inclusions, and flagged 10 non-prescribers kept for their scientific influence.

What you get.

  • Validated KOL databaseEvery physician profiled with practice setting, affiliation, sub-specialty, scoring breakdown, tier assignment, engagement rationale and curated public-record links. It drops into your CRM.
  • Net-new specialist identificationThe physicians your last vendor didn’t find, including the rising stars worth building a relationship with today rather than three years from now.
  • Defensible tier rationaleA written rationale per physician, scored against the six-dimension framework, that holds up in cross-functional review.
  • Phased engagement planNational Champions 12 to 18 months out. Regional leaders 6 to 12 months out. Community prescribers at and after launch. Built around your launch window.
  • QA audit reportWhat we corrected, what we caught and what survived final review, documented so your team can trust the dataset without re-validating it.

What the work has found.

Pre-launch list validation

Narrow oncology indication, international biopharma

We thought we had a workable list. After this engagement we realized we were missing some of the most influential physicians in the country, and we now have the rationale to defend our engagement plan internally.

Client, international biopharma
Situation

An international biopharma company preparing market entry of a novel oncology agent inherited a 149-name KOL list from a prior consultancy. It had never been independently validated. The disease area is driven by roughly a dozen academic centres nationally.

What we did

Full five-stream validation, six-dimension scoring, internal QA audit and a four-tier engagement plan.

Outcome

59.7% of the inherited list failed inclusion criteria. 29 net-new specialists were added, 32.6% of the final validated list. Three Tier 1 National Champions had been missed entirely: a national advocacy organization president, a cooperative trials group committee chair, and a provincial program lead. Seven rising stars were flagged for early relationship-building.

Benchmark validation

Neuro-oncology, mid-cap pharma

The validation gave us confidence the approach scales. The real value was the 27 names we hadn’t been tracking. Those are the next generation we needed to start engaging now.

Client, pharmaceutical company
Situation

A mid-cap pharma company wanted to validate its KOL approach against an industry-standard 86-profile benchmark list in neurosurgery, and to surface emerging leaders not yet captured in established databases.

What we did

Cross-referenced 185 neurosurgeons against the benchmark. Each was scored across 12+ qualification metrics: publication output, surgical volumes, academic impact, grant funding, conference activity and network position.

Outcome

95%+ match rate on benchmark targets rated 7 and above. All 8 high-priority targets identified. 27 emerging leaders surfaced that weren’t in the benchmark data, for 35 high-scoring targets against the benchmark’s 8. Read the case study

HCP target enrichment

Specialty oncology launch

We found Inpharmativ’s product to be accurate and actionable, and allowed our field teams to save time in the account mapping process and execute the campaign faster. I would utilize Steve and Inpharmativ’s services again in the future.

National Sales Manager, Oncology, Mid-Size Pharmaceutical Company
Situation

A specialty oncology client was launching in a sub-specialty that was poorly mapped and loosely defined in commercial databases.

What we did

Independent HCP identification in the sub-specialty, validated against the client’s internal target list, with field-deployable profiles.

Outcome

Saved field-team time in account mapping and allowed faster campaign execution. The commercial team used the deliverable directly.

Why this work holds up in cross-functional review.

We close gaps large datasets leave open

The biggest KOL data vendors are built around national prescription claims and structured citation databases. They’re good at telling you who the highest-volume prescribers are. They’re weaker at finding influencers whose impact runs through guidelines, panels, consensus statements and cooperative trial leadership, and at finding rising stars before they show up in national datasets.

We score every name, so you can defend every tier

Every physician earns their tier from a transparent six-dimension scoring framework. When your VP of Medical Affairs asks why someone is Tier 1, you have a written answer.

Our internal QA catches errors before delivery

We audit the dataset before it leaves the building. In one engagement that meant 17 tier errors, 9 data-inflation cases and 3 inappropriate inclusions, caught and corrected before delivery.

We work in narrow indications and rare diseases

KOL mapping in oncology, hematology, rare disease and specialty therapeutic areas, where the influential clinicians may number in the dozens rather than the thousands, and every miss matters.

Inpharmativ delivered an oncology segmentation and persona project that hit our targets in a tight timeline. Their methodology and overall approach gave us confidence in the data, and the final deliverables were used directly by our medical team in preparation for launch.

The questions pharma teams ask first.

How is this different from large data-vendor outputs?

Large data-vendor outputs are often anchored in national prescription claims and structured publication databases. They tell you who currently prescribes at high volume. We focus on the harder question: who influences whom, and who is on the trajectory to matter in 18 months. We close the gaps standard datasets often miss, particularly where billing data is incomplete, in narrow indications, and in rising-star identification.

How long does an engagement take?

A typical KOL mapping engagement runs 6 to 10 weeks, depending on the indication scope, the size of the universe and the depth of profiling you need. Faster turnarounds are possible for narrow indications. National Champions should ideally be engaged 12 to 18 months ahead of approval, so the earlier you start, the more you get from the work.

Do you only work in Canada?

No. Our engagements span Canada, the United States and international biopharma. Canadian work uses Canadian data sources: provincial billing, CDA-AMC, pCPA and national society leadership. Global work uses the international equivalents. Therapeutic area and indication drive the method more than geography does.

What therapeutic areas do you work in?

Deep experience in oncology (hematologic and solid tumours), rare disease, immunology and specialty therapeutic areas where the influencer set is concentrated. We don’t do high-volume primary care KOL work. The method is designed for narrow specialties where every name matters.

What if we already have a list we like?

That’s usually the best place to start. We treat your list as a hypothesis, validate every name against the six-dimension framework, surface the names you’re missing, flag the names that no longer meet criteria (retirement, relocation, specialty drift) and tier the rest. You keep what’s right. We add what’s missing. We document what we changed and why.

What if our indication is so rare the universe is only 20 to 40 physicians globally?

The smaller the universe, the higher the cost of getting it wrong. Narrow universes are where multi-source identification pays for itself, because two or three missed names can change how a launch goes.

How do you handle data privacy and regulatory compliance?

All physician data comes from publicly available records, peer-reviewed publications, society and conference websites and government datasets. We don’t use prescription-level data without appropriate licensing, and we don’t include patient-level information. Deliverables are formatted to fit your internal compliance and privacy framework.

How do we get a quote?

Book the 30-minute call. We need 20 minutes to understand the indication, the launch window and the universe size. Then we can scope and price the engagement within 48 hours.
